Why paintings don't always turn out
how you want them to.

Painting in watercolor can be so frustrating can’t it? The paints can have a mind of their own and sometimes show little interest in the effect you are trying to achieve. They can seem more determined to go their own way as if creating a painting of their own - one that's totally different from the one you're working on!

Some colors would go on too dark, other times too light. Sometimes too dry. Or too wet. And some colors have absolutely no reason to be in your painting in the first place! Sound familiar?

1 - Water subjects - simple stages showing you how to paint a goldfish swimming in a pond. This works particularly well as a painting because it uses 2 complimentary colors diametrically opposed to each other on the color wheel...orange and blue.
2 - Flowers - colorful heads of three tulips...these very simple shapes will give you the chance to paint whatever colors you like.
3 - Landscape 1 - painting dark stormy clouds over an isolated cottage will give you loads of opportunity to really experiment with the drama of the painting. Try flooding the dark blues and greys in all sorts of shapes and configurations to see what effects you can achieve.
4 - On the beach - semi-translucent sea shells arranged on a bed of warm sand.
5 - In the air - this version of a hummingbird hovering in front of tropical flowers is executed in warm yellows and greens but by all means change the colors to suit your preferences. Hummingbirds come in all manner of colors as do tropical flowers...
6 - Still life - bright red apples sharing a plate with grapes.
7 - Seascape - in painting the waves breaking on the beach you can almost feel the breeze wafting in from the sea due to the skillful use of the cool blues and greens.
8 - Landscape 2 - enjoy painting huge clouds billowing up over farmland. Another opportunity to let your imagination go wild.
9 - Animal World - a wonderful close-up of two cows in a field. Once you've painted this, a good exercise would be to change the brown and white patterns on the backs of these cows without losing the actual physical forms of the animals themselves.
